Scott Berthel's 1970 George Omelenchuk Track

Hi Greg,

I've enjoyed the OST site for a while, and after recently borrowing a camera so I could get pix for the Fixed Gear Gallery, I wanted to send you some for OST.

The bike was made around 1970 by George Omelenchuk; he ran a shop and club in Warren, Michigan (a Detroit suburb) back then. This bike was made for his wife Jeanner, a Michigan and National masters champ and US speedskater in two Olympics. I bought it from her about eight or nine years ago; the only changes are the bar tape and a cheap Sun rim on the rear (I blew out the original on a ride and felt kinda bad--destroying a classic and that sort of thing--until I remembered bikes are made to move not hang). In addition to the frame, George dressed the Nervex lugs, made the double-drilled front rim, the front and rear hubs, and the lugged stem (which competes with the Nervex lugs for my "favorite part of the bike" award).

If I get to NYC someday with a bike, I'll hope it's on a weekend so I can look y'all up. In the meantime, I'll keep this and my other fg bikes rolling around the Detroit area (I'm not a messenger, but commute year 'round to the K-12 Christian school where I work--surprisingly, the drivers in the car-nutty motor city aren't that bad).

Thanks for your site, and for the recent Lucas Brunelle movies. They're the only two I've been able to view on my computer, and I loved'em both. Hoping to find a computer that allows me to see the other vids on your site someday...I've tried backwards, and would love to see it in action.

Cheers,

Scott Berthel
